There is nothing worse than having a chip in your beautifully painted walls. Over time, your walls may endure some wear and tear that can make them look unsightly and neglected. You may need to repaint for hard-to-remove stains, chips, and cracks. Fortunately, you’ll be able to take on the tasks with the proper methods and materials. Here is a guide to help you fix chipping paint on your walls.
What Makes Your Paint Peel?
If you want to fix the chipped paint on your walls, it helps to know the cause of the problem. Paint adheres best to a clean, dry wall and can peel or chip when the surface isn’t adequately prepared.
Primer is essential for smooth paint application. If your walls did not have a layer of primer before the paint, that could have caused uneven application, leading to chipping. On the other hand, applying primer to your walls first, but it was uneven or a thin layer, could also cause peeling and chipping.
Ensuring your walls are clean and dry before painting is the first priority. If your walls are dirty, this can affect paint application; the paint may not adhere to your walls because it is stuck on the grime instead. You can also get an uneven application that can cause chipping and peel down the line.
Invest in high-quality paint. Poor-quality paint will not last on your walls and can more easily suffer from wear and tear. This paint will quickly age and stop adhering to your walls properly.
How to Fix Chipping Paint
Prepare the Area
For a professional, long-lasting finish, first remove the old paint from the affected area. Ensure you have the proper materials for this process: paint scraper, sandpaper, primer, paintbrush, and your paint. Protect your floors and furniture by laying down a tarp to cover them. When removing the old paint, remove the biggest chips first, and be careful not to damage the wall’s surface. Once you have finished removing all the chips, lightly sand the area to make it smooth for paint application.
Patch the Wall
After successfully removing the chipped paint, use spackle to patch the area. Spackle paste is great for filling small areas to smooth out the wall. Apply the spackle in thin layers until it is even or flushed with the painted wall. After, you can either let the wall dry for 24 hours or use a hairdryer on low heat to dry the patch faster. Once it’s dry, smooth the wall with a fine-grit sandpaper.
Paint the Patch to Match the Wall
Clean the patch of any leftover dust from sanding before applying primer. Primer helps the paint adhere to the wall and seal out any moisture. The primer application should be the heaviest over the patch, feathering out to the surrounding areas. Then, once the primer has dried down, you can apply your paint. Use the same paint color and blend the new paint into the old. Once it dries down, your wall should look even and brand new!
